*Arthur Russell - Another thought*

Arthur Russell passed away in 1992 leaving behind a considerable amount of unreleased records. Another Thought is the first collection of works released after the musician's death. Delicate, introspective and innovative, this collection of songs proves the sophisticated pop sensibility of the musician. A wonderful album.

*Orville Peck - Pony*

Enchanting debut album by Orville Peck who with his unique voice creates a beautiful set of alternative country songs that speak about heartache, redemption and revenge. The genres are mixed freely and with ease, shoegaze, surf rock and indie rock coalesce into a unique blend of country.   A true classic for our ages. Queer country.  https://youtu.be/0VlPFpE5fvo

*Trouble - Psalm 9*

Incredible debut album by Trouble released in 1984. A manic mix of doom and thrash that remains fresh and not dated at all. As influential as Black Sabbath, the band creates a unique atmosphere that revels in legendary riffs and very distinctive vocals. Completely original and still sounding way relevant, this debut is an incredible set of heavy songs.     https://youtu.be/q-rhMGxDa6c   <FULL ALBUM>

*Max Richter - Three Worlds - Music from Woolf works"

How much tenderness can the world hold and be such a melancholic place at the same time? Somber, beautiful, delicate and nostalgic. The music remains visionary, it evokes distant memories and creates new ones. Max Richter manages to compose instrumental classical pieces that are perfect soundtracks for daydreaming and sonic escapism. These pieces were composed for a ballet inspired by Virginia Woolf's 3 novels, Mrs.Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves.  https://www.maxrichtermusic.com/albums/three-worlds-music-from-woolf-works/ "The beauty of the world, which is so soon to perish, has two edges, one of laughter, one of anguish, cutting the heart asunder." *Japan - Tin Drum*

The fifth and final studio album by Japan released in 1981 and it's a set of songs that are sophisticated and original. It mixes electronic sounds with more traditional instrumentation with very strong influences from far eastern sounds.  It remains as fresh as when it was released and deeply inspiring and influential. Roland Orzabal (Tears for Fears) has stated his deep appreciation for the album and considers it to be one of the key influences for Tear For Fear's album The Hurting.    https://youtu.be/wapHTm2GtWg     <Full Album>

*Imaginary soundtracks for books #4 : Under the volcano by Malcolm Lowry (1947)*

A poweful set of vignettes that portray the human condition in its misery and recklessness. A tragic story that defines broken and failed relationships set in the beautiful yet lonesome landscapes of Oaxaca (Mexico). There is violence amid beautiful almost divine moments and hopelessness when faced with unlimited love.  It's the slow decline and self-destruction of one man into drunkness and addiction and the consequences in those that love him. It's phantasmagorical and beautiful at the same time and remains one of the most influential novels of the century.  Tracklist: Mr. Airplane Man - Sun sinkin' low Kai Martin & Stick! - Jeriko The Magnetic Fields - Desert Island Eyeless in Gaza - Others The Revolving Paint Dream - Flowers in the sky Romeo Void - Charred remains Great Plains - It's dying New Model Army - Purity The Primitives - Thru the flowers Trio Monte Alban- Oaxaca Guitarras oaxaqueñas - Oaxaca The Lilac Time - It'll end in tears (I won't cry) Br...

*Love- Four Sail*

*Darkscorck Canticles*

This compilation belongs to the Wayfaring strangers series by the unique Numero group that has issued a lot of interesting offbeat compilations with obscure and quirky acts ranging from hippie folk, to lounge, funk and in this case 70's occult hard-rock from the US.  Several acts from all accross combine the rocking vibe of the 70's with rather dark themes that coalesce in a well researched and beautiful compilation. Bands that were unheard like Wrath, Stone Axe, Dark Star, among a lot of others have their darkness finally able to mingle in the light. Outsider hard-rock at its best.  https://youtu.be/MMQTVTibCPU     <FULL ALBUM>

*Death Cab For Cutie - Plans*

Beautiful and ageless indie pop/rock anthems. It's an emotional work of art that has aged gracefully since its release in 2005. It's a conceptual album about the uncertainty that always lies underneath any plan and/or expectation.  https://youtu.be/uizQVriWp8M

*Dwarr - Starting over*

A soothing chaos recorded in a trailer back in the 80's. Multi-instrumentalist Duane Warr manages to create his own realm of dissonance, beauty and strange harmonies that carve out a special blend of psychedelic doom. Interesting to note, that it may be my auditive channels, but sometimes his voice reminds me of Jimi Hendrix (?). It's tranquil and at the same time disquieting, so it's a delicate balance of contrasts. A doomed crooner in the midst of apocalyptic landscapes.  https://youtu.be/ZbNsv-jMlyk

*Timi Yuro - What's a matter baby + Soul!*

Remastered edition of two Timi Yuro's classics, What's a matter baby and Soul! that were released in the 60's.  Timi Yuro was born in 1940 of italian american descent and was raised in Chicago. She started singing as a child and despite being punished by her father for her singing, her mother encouraged her to take operatic training from age 7 to 10. Timi is known as "the little girl with the big voice" and her deep voice manages to create a soulful and inspiring atmosphere.  Timi passed away in 2004 but her voice and legacy still remain.

*Imaginary soundtracks for books #3: Autumn in Peking by Boris Vian (1947)*

Wonderful and surreal, Autumn in Peking takes place in a fictional desert called Exopotamie where a railway line and a train station are under construction. As clever a satire as an inspiring love story, Autumn in Peking remains one of the most imaginative novels of the post-war era.  Tracklist: Boris Vian - La java des bombes atomiques Dizzie Gillespie/Sonny Stitt/Sonny Rollins - I know that you know Milt Jackson/John Coltrane - Centerpiece Ryuichi Sakamoto - GRASSHOPPERS Besombes/Rizet - Lundi Matin Cybotron - Raga Michael Garrison - Escape Benny Carter - Doozy Philippe Besombes - La ville Patrick Vian - Sphère Teddy Lasry/Laurent Caillon - Promised Land https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7owmD4rDbonbei9yRkl4Ui?si=f5c97c2c13e6486d

*Louis Barlow's acoustic Sentridoh - Winning losers (A collection of home recordings) (1994)*

Introspective acoustic ballads with the typical bitersweetness of Sentridoh's music. It's catchy and melodic and the songs appeal deep to our underdog side.  Inspirational anthems for wildcards, underdogs and the dark horses of this world.  https://youtu.be/yOaG5AduS_Q

*Imaginary soundtracks for books #2: Your brain is God by Timothy Leary*

Interesting book that was offered by a friend. It's a collection of essays written by Timothy Leary in which he explores the nature of religious experience as well as taoism, buddhism and tibetan.  I dig the book so I made a playlist for it. It consists of songs mostly in the psychedelic folk realm with some new age and transcendental tunes inbetween. Hope you enjoy! 2 songs for: cosmic awakenings

Woke up pretty early and the sun is shining. It's S. Martinho's summer here in Portugal and it feels great. Here are two songs for cosmic day-dreaming.  Twin Cosmos was the music project of japanese twin brothers Morihito & Yasuhito Ito. This album called Double Action it's spacey, atmospheric and melodic at times. It was recently reissued by Left Ear Records.  Here's a nice little text about them:  https://www.rushhour.nl/record/vinyl/double-action-1 Magic Carpet was an Anglo-India psychedelic folk rock band formed in 1971. *Dr. John - Original album series*

Dr. John's music remains unique, exotic and unpredictable. Completely on a league of his own. Shaman of sonic delights. Psychedelic soul, rock, r'n'b, genres were not unmixable or held borders for this doctor for the sonically curious and adventurous.  This box set was issued in 2009 and includes the Dr's five first albums.  Dr.John reaffirmed his New Orleans roots and created his unique sound that equally amazes and entrances. The Dr. passed away in 2019 but both his music and legacy still lives on.  https://nitetripper.com/

*Imaginary soundtracks for books #1 : NIGHTWOOD by Djuna Barnes (1936)*

Ever imagined what the soundtrack of a book could be? I imagined one for NIGHTWOOD, one of my favourite novels.  Nightwood was writen by American author Djuna Barnes and published in 1936. It is cryptic, intense and bittersweet. A most explosive account of human relationships in a pure and raw form. It is as visceral as it is beautiful. A daring piece of literature that is still challenging in our days.  * Tracklist* - Amy Denio/Orkestar Istina - L'abbraccione - Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels - Josephine Foster - The lap of your lust - Björk/Arca - The gate  - Julia Holter - In the same room - Marissa Nadler/Symon Raymonde - The path of the clouds - Portishead - Wandering Star - Grouper - The way her hair falls - Jenny Hval - The plague - Anna von Hausswolff - Stranger - RAKTA - Fim do mundo - Sevdaliza - Eden - Coco Rosie - Smokey Taboo - Julee Cruise - Floating - Weyes Blood - Movies - Chelsea Wolfe - Lone If it strikes your fancy, you can listen to it here:...

*Dale Jenkins - Undesirable element (1985)*

A set of mystifying, tragic and haunting ballads home-recorded in the 80's by Dale Jenkins, who made a few private pressings. It does have beautiful loner vibes. The music consists of fuzz guitars, funky bass lines and groovy melodies that make for a very unique and distinct kind of sound, that is also made "stranger" by Dale's style of singing, some sort of spoken word and the lyrics are somewhat of a downer but with a few quotable lines. Extremely interesting and captivating. This is a 2020 reissue by GOT KINDA LOST records and it includes a beautiful and informative booklet with excellent notes.  Here's an excellent excerpt from the booklet : "Jenkin's lyrics are nearly cinematic, like bite sized scripts, or character vignettes, filled with wizened, introspective and radicalized perspective, Jenkins was searching, sensitive, subversive, topical, yet several steps from the soap box.  Beyond coming out as gay fairly early in life, having a dedication to ...

*Comus - First Utterance (1971)*

Entrancing and unique psychedelic prog folk that was way ahead of its time and still remains fresh to this day. From Kent in the UK, Comus released their debut FIRST UTTERANCE in 1971 that dealt conceptually with innocence facing abusive power, dabbling in themes related to mental illness and violence, criticizing the coercives forces of abuse of power and opression.  The music is bucolic, experimental yet melodic, featuring a vast array of instruments such as acoustic guitars, violins, flutes and beautifully crafted vocals both female and male.  This is a 2020 reissue by Esoteric Recordings (a sub-division of cherry red records). It features a booklet with comprehensive history of the band, photos and the album also comes with 4 bonus tracks.  The band has achieved a cult following. Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth has stated his admiration for the british band and the title of Opeth's studio album "My arms, your hearse" was a phrase taken from the lyrics of "Drip, Drip...
